Né à Posen en 1832, d'un père juif (mère luthérienne), il étudie la médecine à Berlin puis se consacre à la musique ; violon solo sous Liszt à Weimar. Installé à New York en 1871, il y fonde l'Oratorio Society (1873) et la New York Symphony Society (1878) et dirige la première saison d'opéra allemand au Metropolitan (1884-85). Son fils Walter Damrosch (1862-1950) lui succède à la tête de ces institutions.
