Le plus important marchand néerlandais de tableaux de maîtres anciens de l'entre-deux-guerres. Il reprit la galerie familiale d'Amsterdam et l'internationalisa. Fuyant l'invasion nazie en mai 1940, il mourut accidentellement à bord du SS Bodegraven ; sa collection (plus de 1 200 tableaux) fut spoliée par les nazis, faisant depuis l'objet de restitutions retentissantes aux héritiers.
