Éditeur américain né à Cincinnati de parents juifs allemands immigrés ; son père Julius Ochs était né à Fürth (Bavière), fils du marchand Lazarus Ochsenhorn. Il achète le New York Times en 1896 et lui donne sa devise « All the News That's Fit to Print », fondant la dynastie Ochs-Sulzberger qui dirige le journal jusqu'à aujourd'hui (via sa fille Iphigene Ochs Sulzberger).
