Fondé à Vilna en 1925 et établi à Buenos Aires dès 1928, l'IWO est l'héritier direct du mouvement d'études yiddish de l'entre-deux-guerres, après la destruction du siège de Vilna par les nazis. Il conserve plus de 400 fonds documentaires sur l'histoire et la culture des Juifs d'Argentine et d'Amérique latine, une vaste presse archivée de la communauté juive, une bibliothèque patrimoniale et un musée. Reconnu patrimoine culturel de la ville de Buenos Aires en 2009, l'IWO développe un programme actif de numérisation de ses collections. Il constitue un centre de référence incontournable pour les études yiddish hors d'Israël et des États-Unis.
