Linguiste russo-américain spécialiste du yiddish, il fut en 1925 l'un des cofondateurs (avec Nochum Shtif, Elias Tcherikower et Zalman Reisen) du YIVO (Institut scientifique yiddish). Il dirigea la division de formation à la recherche du YIVO et forma une génération de chercheurs. Son grand œuvre est une histoire de la langue yiddish.
