La petite île néerlandaise de Saint-Eustache (Statia) fut aux XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles un carrefour commercial florissant des Caraïbes, surnommé la « Golden Rock », qui attira des négociants séfarades. Ceux-ci y fondèrent une congrégation et y édifièrent une synagogue, dont les ruines (Honen Dalim) témoignent encore de cette présence. La prospérité de l'île reposait sur le commerce de réexportation, auquel les marchands juifs participaient activement. Avec le déclin commercial de Saint-Eustache, à la suite notamment des bouleversements de la fin du XVIIIe siècle, la communauté périclita puis disparut au XIXe siècle.
