Pathologiste allemand, né à Demmin, en Poméranie, le 20 juillet 1839, mort à Leipzig le 15 août 1884. Formé aux universités de Würzburg, Marbourg, Greifswald et Berlin, où il obtient son doctorat en 1861, il devient en 1864 assistant à l'institut pathologique de Berlin sous Virchow, puis publie en 1867 son essai fondateur Ueber Entzündung und Eiterung, qui établit que l'émigration des globules blancs est à l'origine du pus. Professeur d'anatomie pathologique à Kiel en 1868 puis à Breslau en 1872, il occupe enfin, à partir de 1876, la chaire de pathologie de Leipzig jusqu'à sa mort ; il fut aussi le premier à utiliser la congélation des tissus pour l'examen microscopique.
