Fondateur en 1852 à Stralsund de la chaîne de grands magasins Wertheim, étendue à Berlin par ses fils à partir de 1885. L'immense flagship de Leipziger Platz (1897, architecte Alfred Messel) devient un symbole de la modernité commerciale du Reich ; l'entreprise sera aryanisée en 1937.
