Les Juifs de Montréal

Montreal long housed Canada's largest Jewish community, formed mainly by massive immigration of Ashkenazi Jews from Eastern Europe from the late 19th century onwards, to which were later added Holocaust survivors and, in the second half of the 20th century, Francophone Jews from North Africa. Concentrated notably around Boulevard Saint-Laurent, the community was a major center of North American Yiddish culture, with its press, theater, schools and institutions, as well as an active Zionist and labor movement. Active in garment manufacturing, commerce and the professions, it developed a dense network of communal, educational and social organizations. The dual English-speaking and French-speaking character, the latter reinforced by Sephardic immigration, makes it a singular community in Canada.
