Les Juifs de Brno (Brünn)

Brno (Brünn), metropolis of Moravia, welcomed after the lifting of residential restrictions in the 19th century a largely German-speaking Ashkenazi community, integrated into the industrial and merchant bourgeoisie of this major textile city. The community established modern institutions, synagogues and schools, and participated in the economic and cultural life of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and then Czechoslovakia. Under German occupation, from 1939 onwards, its members were persecuted and then deported, many transiting through the Theresienstadt ghetto before being murdered in extermination camps. After 1945, only a reduced community was reconstituted.
