Miriam dies and the well that accompanied the people runs dry; Aaron dies and all the people mourn him thirty days. The section is a book of mournings, and it describes the rite of purification after contact with a dead person — the care of the dead, hevra kadisha, will become the most universal of Jewish communal institutions, present even where there was nothing else left.
