Né à Montréal dans une famille juive intellectuelle d'ascendance lituano-polonaise. Publia son premier recueil de poésie (Let Us Compare Mythologies) en 1956, puis The Spice-Box of the Earth (1961) et deux romans, dont Beautiful Losers (1966), avant sa carrière musicale (Songs of Leonard Cohen, 1967). Son œuvre est traversée par une spiritualité juive assumée.
