Fils d'un marchand émigré du Portugal via Amsterdam puis Londres, il fut hazzan à Bridgetown (Barbade, 1799), à Charleston (1811) puis à la Congregation Mikveh Israel de Philadelphie (1814-1817), où il tint une école juive et enseigna l'hébreu. Il publia à Philadelphie en 1815 un manuel, A Key to the Hebrew Tongue.
