The ghetto of Padoue was stormed by a mob on the basis of a rumor: the Jews were accused of colluding with the Turks, while Venice was at war with them. Houses were pillaged and the community believed its last hour had come.
The intervention of the Venetian authorities prevented the worst, and the day of deliverance was established as a local holiday — the « Pourim de Padoue » —, following a custom by which a community that had been saved kept Memory of it every year. The rumor of collusion with the Turkish enemy served the same purpose elsewhere.
