Jacob departs alone and returns with a people in the making: eleven sons and one daughter are born in this section, from four mothers. The entire structure of the twelve tribes takes shape here, in a house where rivalries are laid bare. The vision of the ladder, upon a stone placed as a pillow, founds a place — Bethel — and the idea that exile can be inhabited by a promise.
