Moses leaves behind a poem, and the text explains why: so that it may serve as a witness when people have forgotten. The poetic form is chosen because it is memorable — long-term memory passes through song rather than through prose. "Remember the days of old, ask your father, he will tell you": the most explicit genealogical instruction in the Torah.
