The century in narrative

Le XXIᵉ siècle apr. J.-C. est encore en cours, mais son premier quart a déjà livré plus de ruptures que bien des siècles entiers du passé. Pour le peuple juif, il s'agit d'un siècle paradoxal : puissance israélienne sans précédent, renaissance intellectuelle mondiale — et en même temps, retour brutal d'un antisémitisme que l'on croyait exorcisé. Entre souveraineté et fragilité, entre Jérusalem et Brooklyn, entre hébreu contemporain et yiddish ressuscité par les réseaux, le judaïsme du XXIᵉ siècle cherche sa nouvelle forme.

Le siècle s'ouvre dans la **seconde Intifada** (septembre 2000-février 2005). Les accords d'Oslo, signés dans l'espoir de 1993 et brisés par l'assassinat de Yitzhak Rabin en 1995, agonisent. Ariel Sharon, après une visite controversée sur l'esplanade des Mosquées en septembre 2000, voit éclater une vague d'attentats-suicides qui ensanglante les cafés, les autobus, les discothèques israéliennes pendant cinq ans. Plus de 1 000 Israéliens et 3 000 Palestiniens meurent. En réponse, Sharon retire unilatéralement Israël de la bande de Gaza en août 2005 — démantelant 21 implantations juives, pariant que la séparation apportera la paix. Le pari échoue : le Hamas prend Gaza par les armes en 2007 et transforme le territoire en front d'attaques permanent.

Parallèlement, Israël devient une **« Startup Nation »**. Avec huit millions d'habitants, le pays concentre plus de *startups* par habitant que la Silicon Valley. Les universités de Haïfa, de Tel-Aviv, le Technion, l'Université hébraïque produisent des découvertes majeures — prix Nobel de chimie pour Daniel Shechtman (2011), Aaron Ciechanover (2004), Avram Hershko (2004). En cybersécurité, Israël devient l'un des trois piliers mondiaux. En agronomie désertique, en médecine, en pharmacie, la contribution est disproportionnée. Le pays accueille aussi, dans les années 2000-2010, de grandes vagues de retour juif : 800 000 Juifs de l'ex-URSS entre 1990 et 2010, 100 000 Juifs de France après 2000 (Sarcelles, Paris, Toulouse, Marseille).

Du côté diasporique, le **judaïsme numérique** naît. **Sefaria** (lancé en 2013 par Daniel Septimus et Brett Lockspeiser) met en ligne l'ensemble du corpus juif classique — Torah, Talmud, Midrashim, Kabbale, responsa — avec traductions et liens dynamiques. Le **Friedberg Genizah Project** numérise la guenizah du Caire redécouverte par Solomon Schechter au XIXᵉ siècle. Les grandes bibliothèques (Jérusalem, New York, Oxford, Saint-Pétersbourg, Paris) mettent leurs manuscrits hébreux en haute résolution. Pour la première fois dans l'histoire, n'importe quel Juif peut, depuis son téléphone, consulter un manuscrit médiéval que même un *Rosh Yeshivah* du XIXᵉ siècle n'aurait pu voir.

Politiquement, la période Netanyahou — Premier ministre le plus long de l'histoire d'Israël (1996-1999, 2009-2021, 2022-) — polarise. Elle voit en mai 2018 le transfert à Jérusalem de l'ambassade américaine sous Donald Trump. En 2020, les **Accords d'Abraham** — négociés par Jared Kushner — normalisent les relations entre Israël et les Émirats arabes unis, Bahreïn, Maroc, Soudan. La géographie diplomatique du monde arabe bascule.

Puis vient le **7 octobre 2023**. Le Hamas perce la barrière de Gaza, massacre 1 200 Israéliens, enlève 251 otages dont des enfants. C'est le plus grand massacre de Juifs depuis la Shoah. La guerre qui s'ensuit — Gaza, Liban, frappes iraniennes — redessine le Proche-Orient. Mais elle déclenche aussi, dans le monde, la plus grande vague d'antisémitisme depuis les années 1930. Campus américains, rues européennes, réseaux sociaux : les Juifs redécouvrent brusquement que leur émancipation était fragile.

C'est dans ce moment charnière — souveraineté israélienne, diaspora inquiète, patrimoine numérisé, IA générative qui brouille l'authenticité — que naît **Zakhor**. Le XXIᵉ siècle, pour le peuple juif, aura été celui où il lui a fallu réapprendre à graver sur tablette numérique ce qu'il avait hier gravé sur pierre : les mémoires de ses familles, les visages de ses ancêtres, les textes de ses maîtres. Pour qu'à l'heure où tout devient falsifiable, quelque chose reste vrai.
