In 1858, Rabbis Samuel Etting and Solomon Nunes Carvalho attempted to introduce reform into the Sephardic congregation in Baltimore and to establish the congregation "Beit Israel." Hoping to enlist support and funds, Etting conducted an extensive correspondence with rabbis and prominent figures throughout Europe and the United States. His efforts came to nothing, and his hopes of being supported by the Montefiore and Rothschild families also proved unfounded. After two years of attempts, the "Beit Israel" congregation ceased to exist. The collection of letters and the notebook documenting this correspondence presented here are first-rate evidence of Etting's efforts to establish the congregation. 1–8. Eight handwritten letters, sent to Samuel Etting and Solomon Nunes Carvalho in 1858. Letters from rabbis in England, France, and the Caribbean: Rabbi Nathan Marcus Adler, Chief Rabbi of the British Empire (Otzar HaRabbanim 16295); Rabbi Hayyim Guedalla of London; Rabbi Solomon Ulmann, Chief Rabbi of France; Major Aron Wolff of St. Thomas, Virgin Islands; Albert Cohn of Paris, and additional rabbis and individuals. The letters concern the granting of honorary membership in the Sephardic congregation of Baltimore. General condition good. Fold marks and minor defects. 9. A handwritten notebook documenting the correspondence conducted by Samuel Etting with rabbis from various countries and prominent Jewish figures, in the years 1857–1858. In the letters, Etting attempts to enlist support for the Sephardic congregation "Beit Israel" in Baltimore. Among them are copies of letters sent to the rabbis and individuals mentioned as senders of the above letters, copies of letters to Sir Moses Montefiore and to Baron Lionel Nathan de Rothschild, and additional letters. In total, [9] written leaves containing 20 letters. Notebook 30.5 cm. Good condition. Marginal tears and stains. See: I. H. Sharfman, Origins of Conflict Between Orthodox and Reform – Jewish Polemic Warfare in Pre-Civil War America (1988), pp. 647–648; 651.
