Amsterdam-printed plan of the Temple courtyard (mishkan)
תרשים בית המקדש
Description
This printed plate reconstructs the layout of the Tabernacle (mishkan) or the Temple of Jerusalem, with its court, its forecourts and its cultic vessels, based on descriptions from the books of Exodus and Kings. Such didactic engravings accompanied bibles, Talmudic treatises and scholarly works printed by Amsterdam workshops in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. They aimed to provide a visual representation of biblical realia for study, depicting the altar, the table of showbread, the menorah and the ark of the covenant. This cartographic and architectural genre reflects the erudite interest in sacred topography in the Jewish and Christian world of the period.
