Orange, an independent principality enclosed in Provence on the margins of the Comtat Venaissin, maintained a tolerated Jewish community from the 16th to the 18th century. While Jews were driven from the rest of France, Orange, like Avignon and Carpentras, offered a particular refuge. The community had a documented synagogue and cemetery.
