Mobile, a port on the Gulf of Mexico in Alabama, sheltered a mixed Jewish community (Sephardic and Ashkenazic) whose congregation Sha'arai Shomayim was founded in 1844. It is one of the oldest organized Jewish communities of the American Deep South.
