Lengnau, a Swiss village in the canton of Aargau, formed with Endingen the only legal refuge for Jews in Switzerland for approximately two centuries (17th–19th). The two villages, situated in the "Jewish Surbtal," possess preserved historic synagogues. In 1866, the Jews of Switzerland obtained equal rights, ending the exceptional status of Lengnau and Endingen.
