Coimbra, the former capital of Portugal on the Mondego, sheltered a medieval Jewish community well documented in royal and notarial sources. The juderia of Coimbra, known through sources from the 11th to the 15th century, counted a synagogue, a school, and families active in medicine and commerce. The community was forced to convert or go into exile under the decree of 1496.

The days of this book

This book bears no memory day yet. The sources that document Coimbra give years and centuries, never a day; we do not invent one.
