Albany, the capital of New York State, was among the first North American cities to welcome Jews, as early as the Dutch era (New Amsterdam/Fort Orange). Under British rule, the community consolidated in the 18th century, composed mainly of Sephardic and Ashkenazi merchants, making Albany one of the first established Jewish centers outside New York City.
