Israeli historian born in Tarnów (Poland) in 1920, graduate of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Columbia University. He taught at Tel-Aviv, the Hebrew University, Ohio State and Columbia, was the first director of the Ben-Gurion Archives at Sde Boker and held a chair on the Jews of Salonika and Greece at Tel-Aviv University. His masterwork concerns the origins of Byzantine Karaism.
