Né à Jérusalem en 1932 dans une famille juive d'origine persane (la « dynastie Banai »), il grandit près du marché de Mahané Yehuda. Figure centrale de la scène israélienne, lauréat du prix Israël pour le théâtre (1998). Célèbre pour ses adaptations en hébreu des chansons de Georges Brassens et Jacques Brel et pour ses spectacles solo autobiographiques.
