Écrivain de langue hébraïque né à Novi Mlyny (Ukraine, Empire russe), figure fondatrice de la littérature hébraïque moderne et de la Deuxième Aliyah. Auteur de romans marqués par une lucidité désespérée, il fut assassiné près de Jaffa lors des émeutes de mai 1921.
