With Yose ben Yohanan of Jerusalem, he forms the first of the « pairs » (zougot) of sages, both disciples of Antigone of Sokho. Yose ben Yoezer was nassi (president) of the Sanhedrin. His maxim appears in the Pirké Avot (1,4): « Let your house be a meeting place for the sages… » His decisions rank among the oldest halakhic statements preserved.
