Yitzhak Nisimovitch Mavashev, born in 1905 in Samarkand and died in 1978 in Jerusalem, was a writer, linguist, philosopher and journalist who pioneered the study of the cultural heritage of Bukharan Jews (folklore, music, literature). He founded and directed Ha-Tehiya, the first Judeo-Bukharan newspaper in Israel, and left a work of folklore and memoirs published posthumously. The Itzhak Mavashev Foundation (created in 1985) and its Institute for the Study of Bukharan Jewish Heritage perpetuate his work.
