Fondateur de la dynastie de Kaliv et premier rebbe hassidique de Hongrie. Repéré enfant berger par Rabbi Leib Sarah's, disciple du Baal Shem Tov, il étudia à Nikolsburg auprès de Rabbi Shmelke. Surnommé le « doux chantre d'Israël », il composa de nombreuses mélodies hassidiques, souvent adaptées de chants populaires hongrois, dont le célèbre « Szól a kakas már ».
