Born Izo Hertzig in Siret (Romania) into a Hasidic family, he was one of the leaders of the HaNoar HaTzioni youth movement and of Zionist resistance in Romania during the Second World War, organizing the rescue of children and clandestine immigration. He made aliyah in 1946, became a lawyer and then a member of the Knesset (1984–1988). He was honored posthumously for having saved thousands of Jews from Transnistria.
