Trained in traditional study then won over by the Haskalah, he participated from 1891 in the creation of a modernized heder and taught Hebrew in several Russian cities (Kharkiv, Vilna, Kazan) before emigrating in 1904. In Tel Aviv, he founded and directed the girls' school of Neve Tzedek (1918-1937) and was among the 66 founders of Tel Aviv. He published pedagogical articles (including an influential essay on kindergarten as an antechamber to school) and textbooks.
