Born in Babrouïsk in 1829, he studied for two years at the Volozhin yeshiva where he became close to the Netziv (whose sister he married). Rabbi of Novozybkov (1864) then of Novardok for 34 years (from 1883 onwards). He composed the Aruch ha-Shulhan, a systematic review of the four sections of the Shulhan Arukh tracing the origin of each law, considered one of the great codifications of halakha since Maimonides.
