Né à Babrouïsk en 1829, il étudia deux ans à la yeshiva de Volozhin où il se lia au Netziv (dont il épousa la sœur). Rabbin de Novozybkov (1864) puis de Novardok pendant 34 ans (à partir de 1883). Il rédigea l'Aruch ha-Shulhan, relecture systématique des quatre sections du Choulhan Aroukh retraçant l'origine de chaque loi, considérée comme l'une des grandes recodifications de la halakha depuis Maïmonide.
