Born Yasha Kazakov in 1947 in Moscow. At age nineteen, he forced his way into the Israeli consulate in Moscow and led a public campaign for the rights of Soviet Jews to emigrate. He emigrated to Israel (1969), fought in the Yom Kippur War, and then directed the Nativ service, playing a role in the mass exodus of Soviet Jews in the early 1990s.
