Disciple principal du Voyant de Lublin (Yaakov Yitzhak de Lublin), il fonda l'école de Pshyskha, qui rompit avec le hassidisme populaire des cours pour prôner l'étude talmudique exigeante alliée à une intériorité spirituelle et à l'individualité de la pensée, au prix d'un conflit avec l'establishment hassidique. Il ne publia pas d'ouvrage de son vivant ; ses enseignements, transmis oralement, furent édités après sa mort. Son disciple Simcha Bunim de Pshyskha lui succéda, ouvrant la voie à Kotsk, Ger et Ishbitz.
