Principal disciple of the Seer of Lublin (Yaakov Yitzhak of Lublin), he founded the school of Pshyskha, which broke with the popular Hasidism of the courts to advocate demanding Talmudic study allied with spiritual interiority and individuality of thought, at the cost of conflict with the Hasidic establishment. He published no work during his lifetime; his teachings, transmitted orally, were edited after his death. His disciple Simcha Bunim of Pshyskha succeeded him, opening the way to Kotsk, Ger and Ishbitz.
