Né à Budapest dans une famille de lignée rabbinique (grand-père paternel grand-rabbin de Budapest ; descendant du Hatam Sofer par sa mère), immigré en Israël en 1949. Professeur de Talmud à l'Université hébraïque de Jérusalem, lauréat du prix Israël d'études talmudiques (1997) et du prix EMET (2006). Il a recensé des milliers de fragments de manuscrits talmudiques dans les bibliothèques d'Europe.
