One of the great Sephardic Kabbalists of the 17th-18th centuries, specialist in the writings of R. Isaac Louria (the Ari) and the Zohar. His commentary on the zoharic sections of the Idrot (Idra Rabba and Idra Zuta), « Emet le-Yaakov », earned him great renown and formed disciples (including R. Yaakov Taurel). The Hida praised him in the Shem ha-Gedolim. His tomb was rediscovered in the cemetery of Tétouan after about sixty years.
