L'un des grands kabbalistes séfarades des XVIIe-XVIIIe s., spécialiste des écrits de R. Isaac Louria (le Ari) et du Zohar. Son commentaire sur les sections zohariques des Idrot (Idra Rabba et Idra Zuta), « Emet le-Yaakov », lui valut une grande renommée et forma des disciples (dont R. Yaakov Taurel). Le Hida fait son éloge dans le Shem ha-Gedolim. Sa tombe a été redécouverte au cimetière de Tétouan après une soixantaine d'années.
