Born November 15, 1936, in Hamburg. His father, Dagobert Biermann, a Jewish dock worker and member of the anti-Nazi resistance, was deported and murdered at Auschwitz on February 22, 1943. Wolf Biermann became one of the major German-language singer-songwriters and poets; stripped of his East German citizenship in 1976 during a tour to the West, he remained in West Germany.
