Physicien théoricien allemand, d'ascendance juive par son père Adolf Heitler. Co-auteur avec Fritz London de la théorie de la liaison de valence (théorie de Heitler-London, 1927), première application de la mécanique quantique à la liaison chimique, jalon fondateur de la chimie quantique. Révoqué de l'université de Göttingen en 1933 en raison de son origine juive sous les lois nazies, il émigre grâce à l'aide de Max Born, d'abord à Bristol puis à Dublin (Institute for Advanced Studies) et enfin à Zurich.
