German theoretical physicist, of Jewish descent through his father Adolf Heitler. Co-author with Fritz London of valence bond theory (Heitler-London theory, 1927), the first application of quantum mechanics to chemical bonding, a foundational milestone of quantum chemistry. Dismissed from Göttingen University in 1933 due to his Jewish origin under Nazi laws, he emigrated with the aid of Max Born, first to Bristol then to Dublin (Institute for Advanced Studies) and finally to Zurich.
