Born Vladimir (Markus-Wolf) Aronovitch Khavkin in Odessa into a Jewish family. Emigrated to Switzerland (1888) then to the Pasteur Institute in Paris. First microbiologist to develop and administer vaccines against cholera then bubonic plague, tested on a large scale in British India.
