Born in Chiaravalle on 11 November 1918, died in Rome on 5 August 2010. Of Jewish origin, he had to interrupt his studies in Bologna in 1938 because of Fascist racial laws and could only obtain his degree in letters after the war (ethnology thesis under R. Pettazzoni). Professor of ethnology in Bari (1968) then Rome (1972–1994), major figure in Italian religious anthropology.
