Born Uriel Heilperin in Warsaw, he Hebraized his name to Shelach, then adopted the literary pseudonym Yonatan Ratosh. A major Hebrew-language poet, he published his first poem in 1926 and founded in 1939 the « Canaanite » movement, rejecting both religion and classical Jewish nationalism.
