Born September 28, 1923 in New York into a Yiddish-speaking Jewish household of Lower East Side immigrants. Poet and counterculture author, cum laude graduate of Brooklyn College (1944), he founded in 1958 the magazine Birth (which published Ginsberg, Di Prima, LeRoi Jones) and then, in 1964, the satirical group The Fugs with Ed Sanders. Died in New York in 2010.
