Né le 28 septembre 1923 à New York dans un foyer juif yiddishophone d'immigrants du Lower East Side. Poète et auteur de la contre-culture, diplômé cum laude du Brooklyn College (1944), il fonda en 1958 la revue Birth (qui publia Ginsberg, Di Prima, LeRoi Jones) puis, en 1964, le groupe satirique The Fugs avec Ed Sanders. Mort à New York en 2010.
