Born in 1903 in Frankfurt, son of Oscar Alexander Wiesengrund, Jewish wine merchant, and a mother of Corsican/Genoese origin who was a singer; he adopted the maternal surname Adorno in the late 1930s. Central figure of the Frankfurt School (critical theory). Forced into exile by Nazism (Oxford then United States), he collaborated with Max Horkheimer at the Institute for Social Research.
