Founder of political Zionism, author of The Jewish State (Der Judenstaat, 1896). A Viennese journalist marked by the Dreyfus affair, he organized the First Zionist Congress in Basel (1897) and laid the institutional foundations of the State of Israel, proclaimed 44 years after his death.
