Born into a Sephardic family of Charleston (nephew of hazzan Emanuel Nunes Carvalho), he was the first photographer to accompany John C. Frémont's expedition to the West (1853-1854). He kept a secret diary of the journey and published his account in 1860: Incidents of Travel and Adventure in the Far West.
