Né dans une famille séfarade de Charleston (neveu du hazzan Emanuel Nunes Carvalho), il fut le premier photographe à accompagner l'expédition de John C. Frémont dans l'Ouest (1853-1854). Il tint un journal secret du voyage et publia son récit en 1860 : Incidents of Travel and Adventure in the Far West.
