Peintre anglais ; né à Londres le 16 septembre 1860. Il reçut sa formation artistique à Heatherly's, aux écoles de la Royal Academy, à l'Académie de Munich, et à l'École des Beaux-Arts de Paris, où il étudia sous Cabanel. Son premier tableau fut exposé à la Royal Academy en 1881 ; et depuis cette époque, il a continuellement fourni quelques-unes des principales attractions de cette exposition, ses vigoureux « Cassandra » (1886) et « Niobe » (1888) ayant établi sa réputation comme peintre de sujets classiques quelque peu dans le style de Leighton et Poynter. D'autres peintures du même caractère furent « Hercules » (1889), « The Judgment of Paris » (1890), « Echo and Narcissus » (1894). Solomon s'est montré distingué également comme peintre de portraits, son portrait de Mrs. Patrick Campbell attirant une attention particulière par son arrangement novateur des lumières. Il fut élu associé de la Royal Academy en 1894.

Solomon a montré un intérêt marqué pour les affaires juives. Il fut l'un des fondateurs, et pendant les dix premières années le président, des Maccabeans, société qui doit beaucoup de son succès initial à sa personnalité bienveillante. Cet intérêt s'est manifesté dans son art également. Le tableau qui établit sa réputation fut son « Samson and Delilah » ; et il a peint plusieurs portraits d'amis juifs, _p.ex._, du Dr. Ernest Hart (1888), I. Zangwill (1894), Joseph Jacobs (1900), et Solomon Schechter (1902), outre un portrait impressionniste de H. Graetz durant la visite de cet historien à l'Exposition historique anglo-juive en 1887. Ce dernier portrait se trouve actuellement en la possession du Jewish Theological Seminary of America. À ce propos, il convient de mentionner son « Allegory » de 1904, qui est entendu représenter le triomphe du judaïsme comme la religion finale du monde.
