British industrialist, he joined Shell in 1901 and was one of the principal architects of its merger with the Royal Dutch, becoming effectively number two in the group; he played a key role in supplying fuel to the Allies during the First World War (knighted KBE in 1920). Treasurer, vice-president and then president of the United Synagogue, he founded in 1919 the Jewish War Memorial (Jewish Memorial Council) and co-founded in 1942 the Council of Christians and Jews.
