Judge at the Berlin Labour Court in 1929, dismissed by the Nazis in 1933, he fled to London and studied at the London School of Economics, where he became a professor, then professor of comparative law at the University of Oxford (fellow of Brasenose College) from 1964. Considered the father of labour law studies in Great Britain, member of the British Academy, he was knighted.
