Born in London into a Jewish family, he went to Kimberley in 1875 as a diamond sorter, became director of the Griqualand West Diamond Company and then head of the Hermann Eckstein & Co. mining house. President of the Transvaal Chamber of Mines (1891), he played a major role in the financial and technical organization of the gold mines. Member of the Reform Committee, he was condemned to death after the Jameson Raid (1896), sentence commuted to a fine. Created baronet in 1912 and member of the first Parliament of the Union of South Africa (1910–1915).
